Jamaica International Airports
There are two international airports in Jamaica,
Montego Bay and Kingston. Flights into Montego Bay
are generally cheaper, but Kingston is closer to Blue
Heaven. We can prearrange a pickup at either
airport. Please let us know if you want a pickup
at least one week before your trip.
Airport Pick-up Rates
Montego Bay Sangster Airport pick-up or drop-offs (4
½
hour drive): $200 US
Kingston Manley Airport pick-up or drop-offs (2
½ hour drive): $100 US
Your ID
When traveling internationally, carry your passport even
if you don't need one (it's always the best form of
I.D.) and make two photocopies of the data page (one for
someone at home and another for you, carried separately
from your passport). If you lose your passport, promptly
call the nearest embassy or consulate and the local
police.
U.S. and Canadian citizens must have a passport (not
expired beyond one year). Or, to prove citizenship,
bring an original birth certificate (with a raised seal)
or a naturalization certificate along with a
government-issued photo I.D. (all documents must bear
exactly the same name); documents such as voter
registration cards and baptismal certificates will not
be sufficient to prove U.S. citizenship. British,
Australian, and New Zealand travelers must have
passports. Everyone must have a return or ongoing
ticket. Declaration forms are usually distributed in
flight to keep customs formalities to a minimum.

Road Travel
Travel around Jamaica is usually bumpy slow going.
Jamaica has started a
national highway project but there is not much
completed yet. Most travel from place to place is
on the costal road that encircles the island. We
drive on the left (British style).
You have several choices in ground transportation.
You can arrange shuttle service through JUTA, rent
(hire) a car, or hire a driver as needed.
Shuttle (Bus) Service
Jamaica's Island transportation is JUTA. The
Jamaica Union of Travelers Association (JUTA) provides a
taxi service at the airports, with a fleet of
air-conditioned vehicles ranging from sedans to large
30-seater buses JUTA operators can be easily identified
by their white bush jackets and navy blue slacks.
For further information and bookings, please call JUTA
at (876) 924-8511 or (876) 924-8679.
Hiring a Driver or Taxi
All taxis should have a red license plate with the
letters ‘pp’. If taking a taxi, you should verify
the fare before you set off. This will avoid
misunderstandings about the price when you reach your
destination. Tipping is not a requirement, but
rather as a token of appreciation for a job well done.
When tipping, the rule of thumb is 10-20% the value of
the service provided.
Taxi rates are by car, not by passenger. Fares
average about US $5-7 for 10 miles. If you accept a
driver’s offer of his services as a tour guide, be sure
to agree on a price before the vehicle is put into gear.
We can help you hire a driver if you do not wish to
rent a car. Usually we do this on a trip by trip
basis. Most of the trip rates are listed on our
Local To-Dos pages. Our airport pick-up rates
are listed above in the Jamaica Airports section.
Contact us for details.
Rent a Car
Car rentals start at about $50 US per day. They
are available at both international airports and the
nearby Port Antonio airport. Driving in Jamaica
can be a bit adventurous especially at night since the
roads are rarely lit or marked with reflectors. It
is not customary to dim your headlights for oncoming
traffic. When considering whether to rent or hire
a driver as needed, remember, you can't enjoy the
scenery when you are driving.
When renting a car, you must be at least 25 years of
age, have a valid driver’s license and post a bond with
a credit card to cover insurance needs should you have
an accident. Most rental companies do not offer full
third party coverage. Visitors from North America may
use their license for up to three months per visit;
United Kingdom up to 12 months; and Japan for up to one
month, all per visit.
Some car rental groups are listed below.
